Hold on to your hats, Friday is expected to be a windy day across the GLOW region.
The National Weather Service has upgraded to a high wind warning its previous advisory for Genesee, Orleans and Wyoming counties. The warning also includes Monroe, Niagara, Erie, Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties.
A wind advisory will be in effect for Livingston County and a separate advisory includes Steuben County.
The strong to damaging winds are the result of a deep storm system passing close to the region on Friday. Showers and additional thunderstorms will likely accompany the winds, the Weather Service said in a forecast discussion.
Temperatures Friday will peak early in the day then fall back from west to east during the afternoon as the strong winds usher in notably cooler air, the Weather Service said.
Much cooler weather is expected in the wake of the system, continuing into early next week, the Weather Service said.
The high wind warning will be in effect from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday.
Southwest winds of 25 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are expected, according to the Weather Service.
Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.
People should avoid being outside in forested areas and around trees and branches. If possible, remain in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm, and avoid windows, advises the Weather Service.
A wind advisory will be in effect from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday for Livingston, Ontario, Allegany, Wayne, northern Cayuga, Oswego and Jefferson counties.
Southwest winds of 25 to 35 mph are forecast with gusts up to 55 mph expected, according to the Weather Service.
Friday night could remain gusty across the GLOW region, though not within advisory criteria. Sustained winds will decrease significantly, to 11 to 16 mph, while gusts are expected to remain around 35 mph — and up to 40 mph in Wyoming County, according to Weather Service forecasts for the region.
A wind advisory will be in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday for Steuben, Yates, Seneca, southern Cayuga, Onondaga, Schuyler, Madison, Otsego and Delaware counties.
Southwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 55 mph are expected, the Weather Service said.
Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result, advises the Weather Service.
Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high-profile vehicle. Secure outdoor objects, the Weather Service said.
