Travel around the UK and abroad isn’t permitted right now – but there’s no harm in looking forward to post-coronavirus travel experiences.

Particularly since England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have all made various announcements about the easing of lockdown restrictions.

So when can you enjoy a staycation, and when are international holidays allowed?

Here are the latest travel rules.

When can I go on holiday in the UK?

When you can start going on holiday in the UK really depends on exactly where you live.

England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all have their own travel rules for residents moving around their respective countries.

England’s holiday rules

In England, the earliest we’ll be able to enjoy a night away from home is April 12.

This is for self-catered accommodation, campsites and caravan sites only.

Self-contained accommodation is classified as anywhere that does not require shared use of the bathroom, entry/exit, and catering or sleeping facilities.

For hotels and B&B stays, the very earliest they’ll be allowed is May 17.

There’ll be a limit on how many people you can holiday with (your household and another household) – or you’ll have to stick to the rule of six.

Scotland’s holiday rules

Those living in Scotland can start to travel around the mainland from April 26.

Accommodation and amenities will start opening up on this date, too, but there will still be restrictions.

As for the islands of Scotland, when it opens up to travellers will likely be on a case by case basis.

There’s been no official announcement yet about when travellers from England, Wales and Northern Ireland can come to Scotland for leisure purposes.

Wales’ holiday rules

In Wales, things are moving a bit faster.

From March 27, people in Wales will no longer be advised to ‘stay local’ – meaning they can travel around the country again.

Some historic gardens will open and a ‘phased’ opening of self-catered accommodation will begin then, too – though there’ll be restrictions in place.

By April 22, Wales is hoping a review will allow for more amenities, such as outdoor hospitality, to open.

Northern Ireland’s holiday rules

Northern Ireland has not yet announced when travel restrictions will be eased.

On April 12, lockdown restrictions will slowly start to ease, though there will still be a message that residents should ‘stay local’.

First Minitster Arlene Foster has yet to indicate when British people will be allowed to travel to Northern Ireland for leisure.

When can I go on holiday abroad?

The earliest date for international travel is the same in England and Scotland – May 17.

This date is subject to change for both countries – and there’ll likely be restrictions and quarantine rules in place depending on where you want to visit.

For now, find out where you can travel this summer if you’ve had a Covid-19 vaccine.

And unfortunately, a holiday abroad is still off the cards for those living in Wales and Northern Ireland. Neither country has made an announcement about opening up foreign travel yet.
