The number of confirmed positive COVID-19 cases in the Health Department of Northwest Michigan’s four-county jurisdiction has now surpassed 3,000.
According to data from the health department, as of Friday there is now a combined total of 3,004 cases of the illness, including 482 in Antrim, 668 in Charlevoix, 1,028 in Emmet and 826 in Otsego counties. There have also been 58 confirmed COVID-19 associated deaths including five in Antrim, seven in Charlevoix, 27 in Emmet and 19 in Otsego counties.
Additionally, there have been 1,289 confirmed COVID-19 recoveries in the four-county area including 199 in Antrim, 267 in Charlevoix, 458 in Emmet and 365 in Otsego counties.
On Friday, 38 new cases were reported by the health department including five in Antrim, 13 in Charlevoix, 12 in Emmet and eight in Otsego counties. Case investigation and contact tracing are currently in progress, and relevant information will be shared when it becomes available.
“We are aware that tolerance for the current restrictions is running low,” said Lisa Peacock, health officer with the health department. “As public health professionals, we are acutely aware of the risks associated with levels of closure throughout multiple sectors including businesses and school, however, mounting evidence continues to remind us that indoor gatherings without masking and distancing present dangerous risks for viral transmission.
“We must continue to follow the safety precautions designed to protect us all in order to begin to see stabilization, and perhaps reversal, of the recent disturbing upward trends of pandemic risk indicators.”
According to the Michigan Safe Start Map, www.mistartmap.info — which tracks the risk levels of COVID-19 indicators — the state of Michigan has 600.1 cases per million people and positivity is at 13.4%. Both those indicators have been decreasing for a little over a week.
The state death rate is 6.9 deaths per million people, but this measure has also decreased for the past week.
According to the map, Emmet county is showing a 5.8% positive test rate, and new cases are at 272.4 cases per million people, or about nine new cases daily. In Charlevoix county, new cases are 370.5 cases per million people, or about 9.7 daily while percent positivity is at 7.8%.
Otsego County is at 9.8% positive tests, while new cases are at 345.5 cases per million people, or 8.4 new cases daily, while Antrim County is at 9.1% positive tests and new cases are are 271.2 cases per million people, or about 6.3 daily new cases.
The health department will conduct another drive-thru COVID-19 testing event from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 9, at the Boyne City fire station, located at 319 N Lake St. in Boyne City. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged, as it will help reduce wait times on site for testing.
Case investigation information was also reported Friday for 271 COVID-19 cases. The following information is from case investigations completed from Dec. 1-3:
• Ages included 0-12 years, 22 cases; 13-19 years, 18 cases; 20-29 years, 36 cases; 30-39 years, 36 cases; 40-49 years, 38 cases; 50-59 years, 51 cases; 60-69 years, 41 cases; 70-79 years, 21 cases; 80-89 years, six cases; 90-99 years, two cases
• A total of 248 cases were symptomatic, while 22 cases were asymptomatic and one case was unknown
• Thirty-six cases were linked to travel either into or our of the area as reported during case investigations
• Eight cases (as of Friday) are currently or were hospitalized
